While the specific events are fictionalized, the broader circumstance, a woman navigating a divided nation's competing loyalties, mirrors what historians believe many women like the Moon sisters actually experienced.

Watkins, who spent years researching the Civil War era before writing the novel, has said he wanted to give the sisters a fuller, more human story than the historical record allows. As a mechanical engineer by training, he also paid close attention to the physical and technical details of the period, the tools, transportation, and infrastructure that shaped daily life in the 1860s South.

The result is a novel that sits at the intersection of history and fiction, using real gaps in the record as a foundation for storytelling rather than pretending to offer a documented account.
